Guide Channels

Email as a conversation channel

Guide

Incoming email becomes conversations in the Inbox, and replies go out as email. Do not confuse it with Settings → Email, which configures the system SMTP for invitations and notifications: they are two separate things.

The Connect Email Channel dialog is split into four blocks.

Basic Configuration — Connection Name (internal label) and Email Address (the address that sends and receives).

IMAP Settings (Receiving) — Host, Port, SSL/TLS, Username (optional), Password.

SMTP Settings (Sending) — Host, Port, SSL/TLS, Username (optional), Password.

Advanced Settings

  • Sync Folder — the folder to watch. Normally INBOX; if you filter mail into subfolders, point it at the right one or you will see nothing arrive.
  • Max Messages to Sync — the maximum number of emails to import on each check. Keep it low on the first connection, otherwise you risk pouring years of archive into the Inbox.
  • Use OAuth2 Authentication — recommended for Gmail, and the road to prefer: it avoids storing the password.

Use Test Connection before Create Connection. With Gmail without OAuth2 you need IMAP enabled and an app password.
